What To Expect

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Quality Engineer to support incoming material quality control, root cause analysis and data analysis in both manufacturing and lab environments. The Battery is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla’s world class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast‑paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product. The Quality Engineer will lead pilot and mass production projects that impact cell quality, Tesla manufacturability, safety, cost, and field reliability while working in a cross‑functional team throughout the entire product lifecycle and launch into manufacturing. You will guide design decisions, contribute to specification requirements, and collaborate on cell material and process development projects. You will work closely with Supply Chain, Engineering, Equipment and Production teams to take changes and new battery materials from initial concept through prototype development and into full production. What You’ll Do

  • Work collaboratively with R&D, Engineering, Manufacturing, Safety, Production, Maintenance and other cross‑functional teams as the quality expert to ensure production is operated to produce high quality, high performance materials.
  • Define and establish incoming quality control inspections to ensure manufacturing capability and product reliability.
  • Manage non‑conforming process flows and evaluate suspect materials while working closely with internal and external teams to quickly identify and resolve all issues.
  • Lead the identification, root cause analysis, and resolution of potential manufacturing quality issues.
  • Define containment and disposition criteria based on quality requirements.
  • Plan and participate in audits of Tesla and supplier manufacturing lines to ensure all processes follow the plan of record.
  • Drive cross‑functional projects with manufacturing, supply chain, production quality, and research teams to test existing and determine new product specifications and tolerances.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to initiate and implement Process Change Requests (PCRs) to improve manufacturability and field performance.
  • Seek out and initiate continuous improvement projects within Tesla manufacturing and at suppliers.
  • Lead FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing issues are identified and risks mitigated.
  • Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to engineering as well as participate in DFM reviews.
  • Author presentations and summarize high‑impact technical findings.
  • Develop and validate test methods to evaluate critical material properties.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years relevant experience in a quality engineering organization
  • Experience transitioning products from research to production
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them toward manufacturing quality
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; experience creating various reports and database tools for management
  • Ability to use technological tools and business system applications to manage and interpret data
  • Experience working with domestic/international vendors on technical projects
  • Structured problem‑solving methodologies (DMAIC, 8D, etc.)
  • Experience with high‑purity chemical manufacturing at pilot and/or commercial scale
  • Desirable experience in programming (SQL, Python, MATLAB, R, etc.)
  • Familiarity with lab material characterization techniques
  • Data analysis and visualization software (Tableau, JMP, Minitab, etc.)
  • Design software (Adobe Creative Suite, CATIA, SOLIDWORKS)
