Company description: The mission of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is medical translation: transferring biomedical research findings into novel approaches to personalized prediction, prevention, diagnostics and therapies and, conversely, using clinical observations to develop new research ideas. The aim is to deliver relevant medical benefits to patients and the population at large. Since 2021 the BIH has been integrated into Charité as its so‑called third pillar.

For the Computational Medicine group, we are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher (d/w/m) in full‑time or part‑time (min. 35 h/week) for an initial period of three years, starting as soon as possible.

We are seeking to recruit outstanding talent at different levels of experience, from emerging leaders to junior postdoctoral researchers with a focus on Human Genomics, including experience in single‑cell genomics, to join the Computational Medicine team at the Berlin Institute of Health. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals with a strong track‑record and keen interest in establishing their own research group as well as those seeking their first postdoctoral position.

We will consider candidates with experience and interest in different areas, from functional, statistical, or computational genomics. The successful candidates will have evidence of the application of cutting‑edge genomic technologies and high‑throughput screening to understand the genetic basis and mechanisms underlying human diseases. We are looking for applicants with a strong translational focus, driven to identify new genetic targets for the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of different diseases in diverse populations.

For individuals with experience or interest in single‑cell genomics technologies, there is an opportunity to conduct research with recently generated large‑scale data in collaboration with the team of Prof. Simon Haas (see here).

What you can expect

Advancement of the group’s research strategy for molecular precision healthcare through the use of ethnically diverse biobank‑scale DNA sequencing resources, including whole‑exome and whole‑genome sequencing, in agreement with the leadership team
Development of the research group, supervision, development and management of junior staff and students
Developing bioinformatic workflows that integrate population‑scale genomics research with data from single‑cell experiments, to identify disease‑relevant cell types and states
Mining of electronic health records to sample patient cohorts for genetic analysis
Implementation and development of statistical techniques to associate rare and structural variation in the human genome with health outcomes at scale, including the use of deep‑learning derived variant prioritisation methods
Using genetically anchored causal inference methods to advance understanding of the genetic causes and mechanisms underlying diverse diseases and their subtypes in ethnically diverse populations

What you bring along

PhD in genomics, statistical genomics, genetic epidemiology or a closely related discipline
Stage‑appropriate track‑record of high‑impact research and publications in the field of genomics, multiomics, and/or single‑cell analysis
Evidence of successful grant funding and managerial experience, depending on career stage
Demonstrable experience in several of the following areas:
- Generation and/or analysis of high‑throughput genomic data
- Genome‑scale association analyses using large‑scale whole‑genome or whole‑exome sequencing data
- High level of proficiency in computational genomics (e.g., variant annotation)
- Processing and analysis of multimodal single‑cell ‘omics data, including sc‑RNAseq or sc‑ATACseq, ideally linked to germline genetic variation
- Aptitude for biological inference and clinical translation
- Demonstrable extensive experience with principal programming languages in HPC or cloud environments
- High level of proficiency in the English language
