Country Manager in Germany

Are you an experienced leader with a passion for horticulture and operational management? We are recruiting for our Country Manager for Germany. This role will lead teams maintaining war cemeteries and memorials, ensuring lasting tributes to those who served, while honouring heritage and driving impact through innovative operational processes and multidiscipline projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead a dedicated horticultural team of 32 colleagues responsible for maintaining historic cemeteries and monuments.
• Ensure compliance with horticultural and works maintenance standards through regular inspections of cemeteries and memorials. Assess and report on KPIs to ensure cost-effective operations.
• Proactively formulate solutions and provide recommendations to the Operations Manager; manage maintenance and restoration projects in line with the Area Management Plan.
• Assist with maintenance planning, subsidy applications, building permits, and contract quotations.
• Establish and oversee maintenance programs and contractual agreements.
• Share technical expertise and promote sustainable practices (e.g., reducing irrigation and pesticide use).
• Ensure adherence to H&S policies and procedures, including accident reporting and contributions to the Area H&S Action Plan.
• Collaborate with HR to identify training and development needs for staff, prepare succession planning to ensure skills, know-how, experience and CWGC culture are passed on to the next generation.
• Monitor expenditures, assist in preparing the yearly budget, and report any cost pressures or underspending to the line manager.
• Maintain relationships with local authorities, embassies, architects, contractors, and individuals to facilitate Commission work.
• Ensure the Commission's presence and recognition at ceremonial events and liaise with officials for Remembrance Day arrangements.
• Possibility of channel supervision of contractors in neighbouring countries when and where needed (e.g., Poland, Czech Republic).

Qualifications

• An academic background (bachelor's or master's degree) in horticulture, green space management and/or any other related technical operation field.
• Extensive working experience in operations in above mentioned fields.
• Experience in leading and developing diverse teams to deliver high-impact project and operational outcomes, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
• Flexibility and willingness to travel, to oversee operations, engage with stakeholders, and ensure project delivery across multiple designated sites/cemeteries/memorials.
• Strong communication skills in both German and English language.
• Any other additional European language (within Central, Southern Europe) will be considered.
• Multidiscipline exposure and experience in working with organizational policies, work standards and practices.
• IT skills with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, Word and Outlook.
• Awareness and/or exposure to climate impact/biodiversity projects will be considered an advantage.
