Engineer, physicist or similar (f/m/d) - Improved scale-resolving simulation
Stellenbeschreibung:
    Job Description
The Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology
The Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology is the main institution for fluid mechanics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). We are a leading research institute in the fields of aircraft and vehicle aerodynamics, aircraft aeroacoustics, space vehicle aerothermodynamics and wind energy. Our institute is based at two locations - Braunschweig and Göttingen - and has a department in Cologne.

    What To Expect
In the department C²A²S²E (Centre for Computer Applications in AeroSpace Science and Engineering) we develop advanced numerical methods and software solutions for aerospace applications, from multidisciplinary analysis and design capabilities to virtual certification.
On the way to zero-emission flight, ever more precise design methods are required for the aircraft and its propulsion system in order to be able to reliably evaluate the aerodynamic properties of completely new configurations. To this end, a research project with industrial and academic partners is planned as part of the German civil research programme (LuFo), in which the numerical flow simulation (CFD) of engine inlets and fan blades in critical flight conditions is to be improved with the aid of scale-resolution simulation. The modelling of the laminar-turbulent transition, which is often neglected in previous scale-resolving approaches, is of particular importance.
The simulation methodology developed in the project is to be implemented in DLR's globally recognised CFD software and tested and evaluated in close cooperation with a leading industrial company for aircraft engines on application-oriented problems.

    Your tasks
    • You will improve scale-resolving simulation methods for the inlet-fan interaction on the engine, in particular extensions for the laminar-turbulent transition.
    • You will programme the developed methods into DLR's CFD software and verify the correct implementation using basic flow cases.
    • You will generate suitable computational meshes for highly accurate scale-resolving simulations for industrially relevant test cases.
    • You will carry out simulations on DLR's modern high-performance computers (HPC) and evaluate the results using experimental reference data.
    • You will collaborate with industrial and academic project partners and work towards overarching project goals.
    • You will present the results in scientific journals and at national and international conferences.

    Your Profile
    • Completed university degree (Master / Diploma University) in engineering (e.g. in the fields of aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering) or natural sciences (e.g. computational physics, numerical mathematics) or other degree programmes relevant to the position
    • Knowledge of fluid mechanics and/or aerodynamics and turbulent or transitional flows
    • Knowledge and experience in numerical flow simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and scale-resolving modelling (e.g. LES, hybrid RANS-LES), preferably also in mesh generation (e.g. ANSA, Pointwise)
    • Knowledge and experience in programming languages (e.g. C, Python), working with Linux
    • Ability to work both independently and in (project) teams
    • Confident communication in written and spoken English

We look forward to getting to know you!
