Group leader (m/f/d) for basic IT services (focus: Linux) 
 Hochschulrechenzentrum (HRZ) – the IT competence and service center of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) supports around 25,000 students and 5,800 employees daily. From 1 April 2026 you will join the Basic Services team as a permanent full‑time Group Manager to strengthen our HRZ. 
 The HRZ enables tomorrow’s discoveries with today’s IT – you will manage the group, operate Linux systems, clusters and databases, and develop concepts for applications such as the Identity and Access Management system and the virtualization environment. 
 Your tasks at a glance 
  - Team leadership and operational management – personnel management, planning and deployment, participation in HRZ contract and financial management. 
  - Operation and development of central IT systems – responsible for the operation and ongoing development of the Linux server environment, including cluster solutions. 
  - Directory services and IAM – ensure stable operation and continuous improvement of the central directory service (openLDAP) and the IAM system (NetIQ). 
  - Virtualization platform – ensure stable operation and continuous improvement of the central virtualization platform (VMware). 
  - AI services and future technologies – design and implementation of innovative GPU platforms. 
  - Project management – manage ongoing IT projects, plan and implement new, modern IT services, and coordinate external service providers. 
  - User support – second‑level support for users to maintain high service quality. 
   
 Your qualifications and skills 
  - Completed relevant university degree or equivalent experience, proven by many years of relevant professional experience. 
  - Extensive experience in personnel management and IT administration. 
  - Excellent knowledge of architecture, design, implementation and operation of Linux servers, virtualization/container environments, cluster systems, database management. 
  - Very good knowledge of data archiving and storage systems, networks and network protocols. 
  - Good knowledge of developments in the AI environment, especially hardware. 
  - Good knowledge of scripting/programming languages. 
  - Basic knowledge of alternative operating systems (Windows) desirable. 
  - Proven management skills in IT projects and use of service providers. 
  - Knowledge of current IT security topics. 
  - Very good German language skills (at least level C1). 
  - Good written and spoken English skills. 
  - Organizational talent, high service orientation and quick comprehension skills. 
  - Analytical and communicative talent, solution‑ and results‑oriented working style.
