The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior / Lead HVDC Electrical Engineer to work with our Energy and Infrastructure Team in Germany. The role would ideally be based in one of our European offices. We have multiple roles open for Senior / Lead Electrical Engineers across Transmission and Distribution, spanning HVAC and HVDC feasibility and FEED, project management, techno-economic assessments, and regulatory advice. Projects cover offshore wind, interconnectors, energy, rail, utilities, data centres and industrial facilities.

Arup seeks experienced High Voltage Electrical Engineers to join our teams in Europe and the UK. We aim for engineers with strong technical capabilities and the ability to understand client requirements to deliver innovative yet pragmatic, cost-effective project solutions.

Your role

As a Senior / Lead HVDC Electrical Engineer at Arup, you will:

  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to support delivery of T&D infrastructure projects.
  • Contribute to, and lead, the design of HVAC and/or HVDC packages through all design stages from concept to construction and hand-over.
  • Coordinate with internal and external project stakeholders including other disciplines, service providers and clients.
  • Present technical solutions to clients, contractors and authorities.

The role requirements

We are seeking candidates with a qualification in Electrical Engineering / Electrical Power Systems or similar. The role involves bids and projects, client-side work, and teamwork. Relevant skills and experience include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrable experience providing power system consultancy for transmission and distribution utilities and HVDC developers.
  • Knowledge of European and international grid connection processes and Grid Codes.
  • Client and project management on project tasks.
  • Extensive knowledge of HVDC technologies and converter station layouts.
  • Demonstrable experience in HVDC projects including interconnectors and onshore/offshore schemes.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people who have:

  • A Qualification in electrical engineering / power systems.
  • Experience in power system analysis and delivery of detailed power systems studies using software such as PowerFactory, PSS/E, IPSA, ETAP, PSCAD, EMTP-ATP, ERACS and SKM.
  • Capability in DPL, Python, or other modelling languages.
  • Experience performing insulation coordination studies.
  • Working knowledge of protection settings and coordination, cable thermal rating calculations, transformer design and rating, system losses, cost/benefit analysis and earthing study design using CDEGs.
