Lead Machine Learning Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Data Scientist with deep expertise in Generative AI to drive the design and development of next-generation conversational AI systems. This is a hands-on technical leadership role — you will set the direction for chatbot AI initiatives, own critical technical decisions, and guide best practices, but without direct people management responsibilities.

You will be at the forefront of applying large language models (LLMs) and advanced NLP techniques to create customer-focused chatbots that are intelligent, safe, and scalable. Above all, you should have a passion for building the next wave of Generative AI systems and pushing the boundaries of what conversational AI can do.

Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership — Act as the technical lead for Generative AI initiatives, owning architecture, methodology, and implementation.
• Guide and mentor colleagues through expertise and example, without formal line management.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, product, and design teams to ensure AI solutions solve real customer needs.
• Hands-On Development — Build, fine-tune, and optimise LLMs and generative AI models for chatbot applications.
• Design evaluation frameworks for chatbot quality, safety, and alignment.
• Develop scalable data and ML pipelines for continuous training, testing, and deployment.
• Integrate generative AI into production systems with high availability and low latency.
• Explore and experiment with cutting-edge research in NLP, multimodal AI, and dialogue systems.
• Apply advanced techniques like reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), prompt engineering, and custom fine-tuning.
• Share insights internally and externally, contributing to the company’s thought leadership in Generative AI.

Requirements

• Education & Experience — MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related field; 5+ years of experience in applied ML/AI, with strong expertise in Generative AI and NLP; demonstrated success in designing and deploying production-ready LLM-powered systems.
• Technical Skills — Deep knowledge of LLMs, transformers, and conversational AI frameworks (e.g., Hugging Face, LangChain, OpenAI, Anthropic); strong coding skills in Python and familiarity with PyTorch/TensorFlow; experience with MLOps, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), and scalable model deployment; strong grasp of data privacy, bias, and ethical AI considerations.
• Soft Skills — Passion for building and innovating in the Generative AI space; excellent problem-solving and communication skills; ability to lead by influence, not by hierarchy.
• Language — C1 level German is required
