PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
I’m looking for a mobile app developer to help build an innovative, safety-first messaging app that allows users to send and receive SMS messages completely hands-free using voice commands and audio playback. The goal is to reduce texting-while-driving incidents by making communication safer, seamless, and voice-powered.

This is not a general voice assistant, it's a dedicated, streamlined app focused on converting incoming SMS messages into audio, and capturing voice replies to convert back into SMS text.


SCOPE OF WORK:

• Design and develop a native Android app (iOS optional in Phase 2)
• Integrate SMS-to-speech (TTS) and speech-to-SMS (STT) functionality
• Implement car mode: activates automatically when connected to Bluetooth or car dock
• Include voice controls such as: “Reply,” “Ignore,” “Repeat,” and “Send”
• Ensure app runs in the background with minimal battery drain
• Prioritize user safety, privacy, and intuitive UX
• Bonus: Experience with Twilio, Google Speech API, Android Auto, or Voice Accessibility options


Optional/Nice to Have:

• Smart contact filtering
• Nickname Mapping: Allow users to assign and use custom nicknames for contacts (e.g., “Mom”, “Boss”, “Coach”) during voice interactions. The app should recognize these nicknames when sending or replying to SMS messages.
• Emoji Voice Translation: Recognize common spoken phrases like “smiley face,” “thumbs up emoji,” or “heart emoji” and convert them to Unicode emoji in outgoing SMS messages. Maintain natural language style for slang like “lol,” “omg,” etc.


DELIVERABLES:

• Fully functional MVP Android app (APK + source code)
• Clear, developer-level documentation (including setup, permissions, and key modules)
• Basic onboarding flow (first-launch guide or intro screen) and a minimal, distraction-free UI
• Light test coverage (unit or manual test cases to validate voice and SMS functionality)
• (Optional) Basic backend or cloud integration for logging, if scoped in


IDEAL DEVELOPER PROFILE:

• Proven experience with Android development
• Skilled with speech recognition and text-to-speech APIs
• Understands mobile background services and permission models
• Values clean, minimal UI design for driver safety
• Bonus: Experience with accessibility apps or automotive UX
• Strong English speaking communicator and open to iteration
• Familiarity with SMS and Android voice behavior in U.S./Canada context (language, number formats, user expectations)
*For developers located in Latin America or Eastern Europe, prefer those with availability of at least 2 hours of overlap with U.S. Eastern Time.


BUDGET:
Open to proposals. Willing to start with an MVP at a fixed price or hourly contract. This project has strong potential for ongoing work, updates, and future enhancements (iOS version, smart replies, integrations).
