PhD Position in Microbiome Systems Biology

The Microbiome Dynamics Group at the Institute of Microbiology seeks to fill the position of a PhD student commencing on 1st of March, 2026. The position is part-time (65%, 26 hours per week) and limited to 4 years.

Responsibilities

• The Ph.D. project is framed on the new collaborative research project “SynThera” ( The objective is to integrate shotgun metagenomics data with genome-scale metabolic modeling, using machine learning methods to propose novel strategies to increase colonization potential of engineered probiotic strains in the human gut.
• Contribute to several national and international research projects focused on the role of the microbiome in globally significant diseases.
• Share knowledge through publications, conference presentations, and outreach activities.
• Work towards the completion of a PhD based in the project’s research area.

Profile / Qualifications

• A strong interest in conducting collaborative research on the topic outlined above.
• Interest in working at the boundaries of several research domains.
• Master's degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Knowledge and experience in the analysis of metagenomics and/or biological high-throughput data.
• Knowledge of statistical methods in the context of biological systems.
• Experience with programming (Python, Perl, C++, R).
• Well-developed collaborative skills.
