PhD Position: Spaceborne quantum communication

Airbus is offering a fully funded PhD position at TESAT Spacecom, focusing on free‑space optical quantum communication and the design of multi‑user space/aerial QKD network architecture based on trusted nodes.

The position is part of the Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Actions Doctoral Network “FOCAL”. The academic supervision will be provided by Dr. Christian Deppe and the candidate will enroll in the PhD program at the Technical University Braunschweig (TUBS). The thesis will involve collaboration with consortium partners, including secondments at DLR‑IKN (Germany), Fraunhofer HHI (Germany), and short visits to ThinkQuantum (Italy) and the University of Edinburgh.

We are looking for an excellent candidate with:

• A Master’s Degree in physics, mathematics, photonics engineering, communications engineering or other related STEM fields
• Analytical thinking
• A willingness to work in a team and in multi‑partner project structures
• A solid understanding of the concepts of quantum physics, in particular, quantum optics

Eligibility criteria:

• Be in the first four years of full‑time equivalent research experience
• Be of any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity in the host institution’s country for more than 1 year in the past 3 years (MSCA Mobility Rule)
• Have not yet been awarded a PhD degree
