Principal Clinical Data Scientist for Late Phase Clinical Development (m/w/d)
Biostatistics and Data Sciences (BDS) is a global organization within the Human Pharma Business Unit.
By working in close collaboration with other functions at Boehringer Ingelheim and external vendors, we integrate methodological and technical data science skills with business and scientific expertise. Together, we drive smart, timely, and confident decision‑making from Proof of Concept (PoC) to approval and access.
On our journey to transform BDS into a modern data science organization in clinical development, our intent is to create a learning organization in which people develop and deploy leading‑edge data science approaches and technologies to actively plan, generate and evaluate evidence that shapes informed decision‑making along the value chain.
As a Principal Clinical Data Scientist, you support late‑phase clinical drug development by providing strategic planning and execution, data transformation and all aspects of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics of data.
This Position can be filled in Ingelheim or Biberach.
Tasks & Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for indication or substance level planning and execution of clinical projects, including all aspects of analytics and data transformation; provide analytics tools and deliver actionable outputs.
- Work on post‑PoC trials and projects with the opportunity to take a Product Owner role and lead agile teams.
- Apply traditional statistical methods and combine them with cutting‑edge data science methods in designing, collecting, and analysing clinical data from trials and projects.
- Contribute to generating evidence in clinical studies and projects by analysing and interpreting data to tell a compelling story, driving informed decisions and actions that make a meaningful difference for our patients.
- Collaborate closely with scientists and experts from various disciplines in clinical development.
- Enhance your business knowledge and scientific expertise in a global drug development environment and act as a sparring partner within the statistical and data science community inside and outside Boehringer Ingelheim.
Requirements
- Master of Science (MSc) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field.
- Background in pharmaceutical development paired with thorough knowledge of statistical methodology, design of clinical trials or clinical experiments, basic medical terminology and processing clinical trial information.
- Advanced project leadership expertise, ideally supported by experience in agile environments and/or serving as a Product Owner.
- Demonstrated experience in late‑phase clinical development, including submission processes and interaction with regulatory authorities, would be advantageous.
- Advanced knowledge and hands‑on experience in relevant software languages, like SAS and R.
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with people, internal and external stakeholders (e.g., academic partners, CROs, scientific experts, management) and evidence of strong teamwork, also in a global and remote context.
- Oral and written communication skills to interact in interdisciplinary teams as well as the ability to explain, visualise and communicate complex statistical information to non‑statisticians effectively.
