    Product/Industrial Designer Job Description

I’m looking for an experienced product / industrial designer to create design foundations for a modular, high-protection “protector” for Leica M-series cameras. Note: the Leica M10 is provided as an example reference only. The concept must be adaptable across multiple Leica M models.

Important: this brief is for concept & design direction only — no CAD, no fully-dimensioned 2D drawings, and no manufacturing-ready files. A constructor will convert your concept into CAD and production drawings.

    Project goal

Deliver a tightly prescriptive, production-aware conceptual design package that:

    • Preserves full camera operation (viewfinder, hotshoe, dials, tripod foot).
    • Defines modularity and attachment logic so the constructor cannot “interpret” away important constraints.
    • Is explicitly adaptable to multiple Leica M models (M10 is example); include clear adaptation/scaling guidance for other M variants.
    • Communicates look & feel consistent with Leica M (minimal, functional — Bauhaus / Dieter Rams inspiration (less but better). Orange accent - colour of the brand logo).
Deliverables (concept level — no CAD)

    • Design Foundations PDF: product goals, user scenarios, protection levels, modular approach, “do-not-change” constraints for the constructor, and an adaptation strategy describing how the concept maps to other Leica M models.
    • 3–5 annotated concept directions: digital sketches showing distinct aesthetic/functional approaches (ideation level only).
    • Annotated interface/clearance diagrams (non-dimensional): callouts of required unobstructed areas (viewfinder, hotshoe, rear dial, tripod area), suggested mounting points (relative placement), and critical alignment references — notes, not dimensions. Include a short checklist of model-specific dimensions the constructor must verify.
    • Partly optinal: Materials & finish guidance: recommended materials/zones (e.g., TPU soft zones, ABS/PC shells, metal inserts), relative hardness ranges where important, surface finish suggestions, and impact/abrasion targets.
    • Handover package for the constructor: concise PDF + editable visuals (SVG/AI/PSD) and high-res JPG/PNG sketches/renders. Explicitly: NO STEP/STL/CAD files.

If possible: Please include a short (15–30 second) video showing typical use scenarios to communicate ergonomics and handling. One scene should be a controlled drop-test where the camera falls onto the floor to demonstrate the protector’s impact performance.

    Additional adaptation requirement

Your Design Foundations must contain a dedicated Adaptation & Scaling Guidance section showing:

    • Which elements must remain fixed (functional clearances / “do-not-change” list).
    • Exact model dimensions will be provided under NDA to shortlisted candidates; you should explain how you would approach small dimensional differences without providing model-specific CAD yourself. For convenience, the designer can also be provided with a 3D scan of a Leica M4 — most control elements and their placements are very similar to the M10, so the scan should serve as a useful ergonomic and clearance reference.
    Explicit non-deliverables

    • No CAD models (SolidWorks/Fusion/Rhino).
    • No fully-dimensioned 2D manufacturing drawings or BOMs.
    • No tooling or detailed injection-molding drawings.
    Constraints you must respect

    • Preserve barrier-free operation of Leica M controls (viewfinder, hotshoe, rear exposure dial, tripod area).
    • The precise technical implementation of connection and fastening mechanisms is not part of this assignment — those details will be developed by the engineer/constructor. The designer should propose the locations and general form of control and fastening elements (clear placement guidance), but not deliver engineered connector designs.
    • Minimal / functional aesthetic (Bauhaus / Dieter Rams).
    Skills & experience

    • Strong industrial/product design background — relevant portfolio required.
    • Excellent sketching and visual communication (hand or digital).
    • Proven ability to produce prescriptive, unambiguous non-CAD design guidance that engineers can implement.
    • Good knowledge of prototyping materials and validation methods.
    • Fluent English communication.
    Proposal requirements

    • Short cover note explaining fit and how you approach concept→constructor handoff and multi-model adaptability.
    • Link to portfolio.
    • Timeline: time to first concepts and time to final Design Foundations PDF.
    • Pricing: hourly
    • Availability and expected weekly capacity.
    • Willingness to sign a short NDA (detailed brief and model dimensions sent to shortlisted candidates).
