Overview

Research Associate / Doctoral Researcher (m/f/x) in Transportation in the TRR408 AgiMo. Join the TUM Professorship of Mobility Policy starting October 1, 2025, as a doctoral researcher in the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center AgiMo TRR 408. The CRC is funded by the German Research Foundation and involves multiple universities and the DLR. The RTG provides a qualification program, networks, internationalization, and a collaborative environment. TUM embraces diversity and encourages all qualified applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Independent and cooperative scientific research within the project (PhD topic C5) and associated empirical data processing for case study analysis.
  • Implementation of the planned research program, evaluation, interpretation of results, and presentation of findings.
  • Participation in lectures, workshops, and summer schools; supervision support for Bachelor/Master theses in the field.
  • Regular progress reporting to supervising professors; publication of results individually and/or jointly.
  • Maintenance of internal exchange platforms (database, information pages, etc.).
  • Dissertation under the RTG framework within approximately 3 years and 9 months; collaboration with other CRC members and international partners; potential international research exchanges.

Qualifications

  • Excellent university degree (diploma, master) in transport or related fields with a solid basis in transport, data science, and/or data analytics; or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with large-scale spatial-temporal traffic and/or travel behavior data (e.g., loop detectors, floating car data, GPS, cellphone data).
  • Experience with transport simulation software (e.g., SUMO, MATSim) and programming in R, Python, Julia, MATLAB, or similar.
  • Strong English communication skills (German language advantageous). Ability and willingness to submit the dissertation within 3 years and 9 months.
  • Interest in transport policy and interdisciplinary collaboration; openness to internationalization and diversity.

Project details

Project C5 focuses on the multimodal macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) representing network-wide traffic states in urban road networks (cars, buses, trams, bicycles, trucks) as a function of supply and demand. Tasks include developing MFD-based assessment indicators, linking MFD to an agent-based simulation (MATSim), and applying methods to case studies including Greater London.
