Job Description
We are recruiting experienced Scientific Software Developers to be part of our team that will provide ground segment data processing software engineering services to our customer, Eumetsat in Darmstadt.
The activities are associated to the design and development of the pre-processing and resampling component of the processor for CIMR Level 2 oceanographic and atmospheric products over global ocean.
The CIMR mission
The Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) is a satellite system developed by ESA as part of the European Union Copernicus program expansion activities. CIMR is designed in response to the Integrated European Policy for the Arctic. The main aim of the CIMR mission is to provide high-spatial resolution microwave imaging radiometry measurements and derived products with global coverage and sub-daily revisit in the polar regions and adjacent seas to address Copernicus user needs. The CIMR mission will also allow to measure fundamental quantities associated with largescale ocean-atmosphere processes over the global ocean. This capability will be based on a multi-channel conically scanning microwave imaging radiometer.
The L2 processor
The L2 retrieval processor of the GO (Global Ocean) product families is currently under development at EUMETSAT. It is foreseen that it will be composed of three internal main sub-modules: a preprocessing,a re-sampling and a retrieval sub-module.
Responsibilities
The scope of the complete service to be provided by the team covers the following:
The work will primarily focus on the development, implementation and documentation of a set of brightness temperature correction, adjustment and resampling algorithms necessary for the retrieval of CIMR L2 oceanographic and atmospheric products over the global ocean.
To Summarize, The Components To Be Developed Are The
- Faraday rotation angle correction.
- Celestial glint contamination correction.
- Observation zenith angle (OZA) adjustment.
- Resampling from the L1b measurement to target L2 sample locations.
The first main objective is to design, propose and document a brightness temperature preprocessing and re-sampling algorithm.
The second main objective is to verify that the algorithm can meet the requirements of the Global Ocean (O) and Atmospheric (A) portfolio of L2 product families, by implementing, testing and delivering a prototype software.
The following tasks shall be performed:
- Literature review.
- Design of the pre-processing and re-sampling algorithm.
- Implementation and verification of the pre-processing and resamplin algorithm.
- Provision of the prototype software.
Qualifications & Competencies
A university degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline is required.
We are seeking candidates who shall cover a broad range of skills and knowledge associated with:
- Space instrument capabilities and characteristics (in particular CIMR and comparable instruments, i.e. conically scanning microwave imagers);
- Microwave remote sensing of the ocean and atmosphere, including radiative transfer modelling;
- Geo-physical products (e.g. L2) development and handling;
- Scientific software development.
In particular, excellent knowledge of scientific foundations and relevant state-of-the-art is required, with understanding of modelling error sources.
This is a full-time position to be located at Terma in Darmstadt, Germany, with the expected start date to be discussed.
