We are looking for a passionate and proficient industrial scientist with expertise in power system analysis/ management and high-level programming at our research center in Mannheim/Germany. In an inter-disciplinary environment, you will drive cutting-edge innovation for different complex systems in power grid applications. How you\'ll make an impact
- You create impact: Design innovative approaches for grid operation and deliver them as prototypes and robust software modules
- You investigate: Translate real power‑system problems into rigorous models and design computational experiments to quantify accuracy and robustness; ensure reproducibility with versioned code and data
- You take initiative: Collaborate with a global and inter-disciplinary team of researchers in Hitachi Energy Research to drive the development from concept to MVP and partner with product/software teams to bring solutions to production
- You connect: Build relationships within the company and actively share your knowledge and expertise. Interact with local and global external partners including universities, start-ups, and vendors to integrate diverse perspectives and stakeholder inputs
- You communicate: Disseminate your results in scientific publications, patent applications, and technical reports. Produce clear design docs and developer-facing examples/ notebooks that enable reuse
Your background
- PhD in Electrical/Power Systems Engineering, Automation, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Master’s degree with equivalent industry experience
- Proven expertise in modelling and steady-state analyses of power grids demonstrated hands-on expertise applying these methods in software development.
- Knowledge in mathematical optimization applied to power systems, and modern numerical solvers is strongly desired (e.g., MIP/NLP, stochastic; tools such as Gurobi, CPLEX, Ipopt). Experience with machine learning and/or artificial intelligence technologies is a plus
- Proficiency in C#, C++, Rust or a similar high-level programming language is required; Python and/or Matlab for analytics and fast prototyping are a plus.
- Experience building state-of-the-art software engineering techniques (version control, code reviews, testing, CI/CD) and integrating solution algorithms into applications are beneficial (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes). High performance computing skills such as parallel/distributed computing, GPU, OpenMP or MPI would be beneficial
- Excellent communication skills in English, team player attitude, initiative and creativity
