Contract/Freelance Senior Digital Forensics & Incident Response (DFIR) Consultant

Location: Remote (Based in France, Netherlands, or Germany) – Occasional Travel

We are looking for an experienced cybersecurity professional with extensive experience in digital forensics and incident response (DFIR)

This person will bring deep technical expertise and strategic insight to both reactive investigations and proactive resilience initiatives.

Operating across international markets, they specialize in supporting clients through high-stakes cyber incidents while also preparing them to prevent and mitigate future threats.

Key Responsibilities

Reactive Forensic Investigations & Expert Analysis

• Lead complex, high-profile digital forensic investigations involving advanced threat actors and sophisticated breach scenarios.
• Identify initial attack vectors, assess the scope of compromise, and uncover data exfiltration using a wide range of forensic tools and methodologies.
• Act as a technical subject matter expert in at least two of the following areas: host-based forensics (Windows, Linux, macOS), network forensics, memory forensics, mobile device forensics, or cloud forensics.
• Ensure forensic soundness in evidence handling and deliver comprehensive, legally-defensible investigation reports for clients, legal counsel, and regulatory authorities.
• Work directly with clients in high-pressure environments, consistently exceeding expectations in a customer-facing capacity.

Proactive Cyber Resilience Engagements

• Lead the development and implementation of customized Incident Response Plans (IRPs), aligned with frameworks such as NIST and SANS.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and boards, providing strategic guidance on incident readiness and cyber risk.
• Design and conduct advanced breach simulation exercises, including technical red/blue team scenarios and executive-level tabletop exercises.
• Create realistic threat scenarios (e.g., ransomware, insider threat, nation-state activity) to evaluate client response capabilities under real-world conditions.
• Deliver clear, actionable recommendations through post-exercise reports to drive continuous security improvements.

Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in cybersecurity, digital forensics, or a related field.
• Proven expertise in incident response, computer forensics, and working with technologies related to industrial control systems, IoT, and eDiscovery.
• Hands-on experience with at least two major operating systems: Windows, Linux, Unix, or macOS.
• Demonstrated success in consulting roles, providing DFIR services to clients in both reactive and proactive contexts.
• Skilled in managing sensitive investigations, maintaining client trust, and handling confidential information with discretion.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in both written and spoken English.
• Ability to adapt and perform under pressure in dynamic and complex environments.
