We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role offers an opportunity for an automation-focused senior technologist passionate about Linux to build a career with Canonical and support those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you'll enjoy working with some of the industry’s best at Canonical.

Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, which are used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops Engineer, you'll drive operations automation in both private and public clouds by utilizing open source infrastructure as code software, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical’s automation products. You will also provide critical feedback to developers, submit bugs, and collaborate on design and implementation to improve open-source technologies at scale. You will be part of a global team supporting services for our company, customers, and the Ubuntu community.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation and Gitops development as an embedded tech lead.
• Collaborate with IS architect to align solutions with IS architecture vision.
• Design and develop services as products for IS.
• Develop infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and improving processes.
• Automate software operations across clouds, considering distributed system complexities.
• Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
• Enhance troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance analysis skills; implement observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch.
• Support and work with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support teams.
• Focus on larger projects and automation during dedicated development time.
• Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work.
• Handle time-critical escalations responsibly.

Candidate Requirements

• Modern hosting architecture driven by Infrastructure as Code across clouds.
• Product mindset focused on developing products rather than solutions.
• Experience in Python software development with large projects.
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems.
• Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure via code.
• Knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls, storage, and enterprise Linux administration.
• Extensive understanding of cloud computing technologies.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field.
• Effective communication skills in English across various mediums.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and willingness to learn new skills quickly.
• Passion for open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian, and ability to work in distributed teams.
