JetBrains Berlin

Stellenbeschreibung:

Senior UX Researcher, Mixed Methods (IntelliJ IDEA)

At JetBrains, code is our passion. Ever since we started, back in 2000, we have strived to make the strongest, most effective developer tools on earth. By automating routine checks and corrections, our tools speed up production, freeing developers to grow, discover, and create.

Distributed Product Research (DPR) is a company‑wide matrix structure that embeds research practices into product teams and coordinates Dedicated Product Researchers (DPRs) across the whole company by connecting them to the centralized Research Competence Center. DPRs at JetBrains are deeply integrated into the product development workflows of their teams while also leveraging the competencies, processes, and infrastructure of the Market Research & Analytics team. This allows them to benefit from the strengths and mitigate the weaknesses of classic pure agency and distributed research organizational models.

We are looking for an experienced UX researcher to become a Dedicated Product Researcher for IntelliJ IDEA, JetBrains’ flagship IDE focused on Java and Kotlin developers. You will take responsibility for our user and market research efforts across multiple user segments and development scenarios. As a DPR, you will report to IntelliJ IDEA Product and Marketing Leads, as well as to the DPR Lead. This means you’ll be working exclusively on research tasks for the IntelliJ IDEA team while enjoying research support and mentorship from the centralized Market Research & Analytics team.

Creating developer productivity tools is a challenge for which there are no ready‑made solutions. In addition to the unique experience of this role, a successful candidate will make life easier for millions of developers all over the world while influencing the way software products are created.

In this role, you will:

  • Explore existing user and market conditions with qualitative research methods (including user segmentation and the examination of specific workflows or scenarios, user flows, and related issues in real‑life contexts).
  • Validate various product artifacts with qualitative methods (including moderated and unmoderated usability tests with prototypes and live code).
  • Test marketing positioning and communications, and collect research insights for marketing activities.
  • Act as a connection point between the product and the Market Research & Analytics teams, including by consulting on the Market Research & Analytics team’s capabilities and redirecting research requests that are out of the DPR scope to them.
  • Mentor decision‑makers on UXR methods and help product team members acquire the necessary research skills and workflow knowledge to conduct small‑scale studies.
  • Develop and maintain various research‑supporting initiatives, such as product research panels and research knowledge bases.

We will be happy to have you on our team if you have:

  • A t least five years of experience working as a UX or product researcher in commercial IT product development.
  • Knowledge of major UX research methods (including moderated and unmoderated usability studies, interviews, diary studies, focus groups, and surveys) and frameworks (like user personas, JTBD, and customer journey maps), as well as an understanding of how UX research is integrated into the product development lifecycle.
  • A general understanding of software development, developer workflows, and development tools – without necessarily being proficient in programming yourself.
  • Experience working with various research tools for:
  • Participant recruitment (like User Interviews, UserTesting, UserZoom, and external recruitment agencies).
  • Scheduling and running moderated and unmoderated sessions (including Calendly, conferencing software like Google Meet and Zoom, and unmoderated platforms like Lyssna, Lookback, and Optimal Workshop).
  • Qualitative data analysis and reporting (such as Otter, Condens, Dovetail, or Miro).
  • Surveying (like Alchemer or Qualtrics).
  • Experience in UXR mentorship and evangelization within commercial organizations.
  • Proficiency in English and strong spoken and written communication skills.

We’d be especially thrilled if you have:

  • A general understanding of Java and Kotlin.
  • Hands‑on experience in software development, ideally with Java or Kotlin.
  • Hands‑on experience in IT product or product marketing management.
  • Experience in exploratory data analysis using Python and Jupyter Notebooks or Datalore.
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis using Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • A working knowledge of Chinese or Japanese.
