As an AI Engineer, you will work with the latest cutting-edge AI technologies and have the opportunity to make independent technical decisions. Your contributions will directly support Railway Functional Design engineers in accelerating the development of Railway Infrastructure Design for our client Deutsche Bahn.

Responsibilities

Become part of a team, building a next-generation platform that helps Mermec Railway Engineers accelerate and improve the development of Railway Infrastructure. As an AI Engineer, you will contribute directly to the development, optimization, and integration of cutting-edge AI models to build enterprise AI Agents and Applications.

• Designing and fine-tuning LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering and performance evaluation.
• Development of MCP Servers for internal use.
• Implementing RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) systems and optimizing vector databases for fast information retrieval.
• Integrating AI Agents into a modern web platform using FastAPI.
• Deploy and optimize the latest open-source LLMs locally using Ollama for efficient concurrent serving, ensuring all processing occurs on-premises due to the confidential nature of the data.
• Manage and run Docker containers within a Kubernetes cluster on local servers to maintain high availability and scalability.
• Developing monitoring systems to track model quality, bias, and performance metrics.
• Automating and streamlining AI workflows through pipeline development and orchestration tools.

Technical Skills, Qualifications and Professional Experience

• A degree in computer science, data science, machine learning, or a related field – or equivalent practical experience through projects or prior roles.
• Proficient in Python and familiar with ML/AI frameworks such as PyTorch, HuggingFace, Pandas, LlamaIndex or Langchain.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs such as GPT, Claude, or open-source variants, and an understanding of their underlying mechanics.
• Knowledge of prompt engineering, RAG systems, and best practices for model evaluation.
• Experience with backend development using FastAPI or Flask/Django and good to have frontend development knowledge - JavaScript/React.
• Strong enthusiasm for AI and its potential in software development, with a pragmatic, problem-solving mindset.
• Fluent in English (B2+); German language skills are a plus.
• Willingness to work on-site at least 3 days per week in Munich.
• Valid EU work permit required.
• Direct access to cutting-edge AI tools and infrastructure.
• 1+ years of work experience with Large Language Models (LLM) based applications.
