The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching near Munich is a world-leading research institution in experimental astronomy. Our research covers infrared and submillimeter astronomy, high-energy astronomy, optical and interpretative astronomy, as well as astrochemical studies. Our institute develops and builds scientific instruments intended for operation at large telescopes (VLT, LBT, ELT) as well as for integration into satellites (XMM-Newton, eROSITA, Einstein Probe, and SVOM).
Within the framework of the new ESA mission NewATHENA, MPE is responsible for testing the optics of the new X-ray satellite using its X-ray test facility PANTER. To meet the requirements of this mission, a new microfocus X-ray source is to be established, whose spatial and spectral properties must be determined and optimized. In addition, numerous optical measurements are to be carried out for other X-ray observatories such as eXTP and the AXIS project.
