Job Title: Ceph Developer (C++ / Python)

Duration: Initial 1 year contract
Workload: Full time hours
Setup: Freelance (Daily rate / Limited Company / Umbrella / Sole Trader)
Location: Remote

Join our client’s engineering team to help evolve and optimise the Ceph Storage Service in large-scale, Kubernetes-driven cloud-native environments. This is a long-term freelance opportunity for a seasoned developer with deep systems knowledge and a passion for open-source storage technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and implement new features across Ceph modules (RGW, RADOS, RBD, CephFS)
• Optimise performance, scalability, and reliability of distributed storage systems
• Debug low-level system behaviour and troubleshoot complex storage issues
• Contribute to upstream Ceph development and community discussions
• Integrate Ceph with Kubernetes using Rook and CSI drivers
• Enhance observability through telemetry and metrics
• Collaborate in Agile teams and contribute to documentation and design reviews

Must-Have Skills:

• 5+ years of experience with C++ and Python
• Hands-on experience with Ceph (any of RGW, RADOS, RBD, CephFS)
• Strong understanding of Linux internals (I/O, memory, threading)
• Familiarity with Kubernetes, Rook, and CSI drivers
• Experience with Git, GitHub, and CI/CD pipelines
• Exposure to cloud-native or large-scale infrastructure
• Proficiency with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana)

Nice-to-Have:

• Contributions to open-source projects (especially Ceph)
• Experience with AWS, Azure, or OpenStack
• Familiarity with performance profiling and benchmarking tools
• Knowledge of S3/Swift protocols and object storage semantics
