Data Scientist or Machine Learning / AI expert (m/f/d)

The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF), in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI-CBS), is looking for a Data Scientist or Machine Learning / AI expert (m/f/d) Kennziffer 07/2025 to join the AI and High-Performance Data Analytics division of MPCDF.

In this role, you will contribute to a variety of cutting‑edge research projects at the interface of AI, data science, and neuroscience. Your work will contribute to developing advanced methods for:

• High‑precision image segmentation and ultra‑high resolution MR image reconstruction
• Modeling complex brain dynamics to better understand human cognition
• Handling and analyzing large, high‑dimensional imaging datasets, including working with limited sample sizes and advanced learning paradigms

In addition, you will serve as a key contact person for researchers at the MPI‑CBS, supporting them in efficiently leveraging the high‑performance computing (HPC) infrastructure at MPCDF to accelerate their research.

Qualifications

• A PhD in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline
• Hands‑on experience working with large HPC systems, including tools for remote access, job scheduling, and performance profiling
• Proven experience in handling large‑scale, multi‑dimensional datasets
• Strong background in prototyping and optimizing ML/AI workflows
• Deep understanding of machine learning algorithms and modern deep learning fundamentals
• Excellent programming skills in Python and PyTorch
• Practical experience with transformer architectures and deploying and fine‑tuning of Large Language Models (LLMs)
• Excellent communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to work across disciplines
• Curiosity, adaptability, and a passion for deep‑diving into complex technical challenges and existing codebases

Bonus points for

• Experience with agent‑based AI workflows
• Knowledge of containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Singularity, Apptainer) and software deployment
• Familiarity with Linux system administration and web‑based service development
• Hands‑on experience in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)

The full‑time position starts as soon as possible and is initially limited for a maximum period of three years. Salary will be based on experience according to the German TVöD.
