Berlin, Germany (Remote work possible within Germany)
About us:
CALIMA is a Berlin-based B2B SaaS startup with a mission to make workplace safety simpler, more reliable, and more effective through digital and innovative solutions. Our software helps companies ensure that lone workers receive assistance quickly in an emergency. CALIMA is used by hundreds of companies and protects thousands of employees every day. We are a small, ambitious team with high standards of quality, and we work pragmatically and with a focus on the product. We are looking for people who don’t just check off tasks, but who take responsibility, contribute ideas, and actively improve our processes.
Your role:
As a DevOps / Platform Engineer, you play a key role in ensuring the stability, security, and scalability of our entire platform. You will be responsible for the infrastructure of a security-critical product that protects thousands of remote workers every day. In this role, you will ensure that our systems run robustly, perform well, and remain highly available.
Quality is our top priority at CALIMA: We rely on EU-based providers (OVH and Hetzner) and operate a multi-cloud setup to ensure reliability, data sovereignty, and cost control—with a focus on EU hosting and data protection.
Important: We are a small tech team. For you, this means a lot of ownership, creative freedom, and direct impact—but also a willingness to take on projects from start to finish. We’re looking for someone with high standards who proactively identifies, prioritizes, and implements solutions—from architectural decisions to operational excellence. You’ll start by working closely with the Head of Tech and will quickly take on a lot of ownership.
Infrastructure & Platform
- Maintenance and expansion of our Infrastructure-as-Code environment (Terraform / OpenTofu, private networks, databases, storage, security, monitoring, etc.)
- Support for operating dedicated hosting setups for enterprise customers
Reliability & Observability
- Implementation and continuous improvement of logs, metrics, and traces
- Ensuring the stability, performance, and availability of our systems
- Further development of deployment and release processes (zero downtime)
Security & Compliance
- Implementation of security best practices (IAM, secrets, hardening, encryption, backups)
- Support in meeting security and compliance requirements (e.g., ISO 27001, GDPR)
- Participation in a fairly organized on-call rotation
- Establishing and improving alerting, incident management, and disaster recovery processes
- Development of runbooks, postmortems, and sustainable improvements
What you bring with you:
- Several years of experience (typically 5+ years) as a DevOps/Platform Engineer or in a similar role in a cloud/SaaS environment
- You have already held positions with broad responsibilities , ideally in startups or small teams, or in roles involving end-to-end ownership
- Extensive knowledge of Kubernetes (deployment, networking, ingress, observability, scaling) and modern EU cloud infrastructure (e.g., OVH and Hetzner)
- Extensive experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, preferably Terraform/OpenTofu , including the structuring of modules, state, secrets, and environments
- Confident use of monitoring, logging, and alerting tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Loki, or comparable solutions)
- Understanding of cloud security topics: networks, secret management, encryption, and secure configurations
- Experience with highly available, mission-critical systems —ideally in a B2B SaaS or security-related context
- A structured, self-directed, and quality-conscious approach to work , combined with a pragmatic understanding of priorities (features vs. stability vs. technical debt)
- Fluency in German – our meetings are conducted in German
