As our Director of Engineering, you will lead a team of around 60 engineers organized under 4 Senior Engineering Managers, driving both technical excellence and cultural transformation. You’ll be responsible for modernizing our platform and building EMSPaaS (e‑Mobility Service Provider as a Service) – empowering others to create delightful charging experiences across Europe and Japan. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of e‑mobility while reigniting an engineering culture built on innovation, experimentation, and cutting‑edge practices. Reporting directly to the Chief Technology and Operations Officer, you’ll be a key member of the technology leadership team, balancing strategic vision with hands‑on technical credibility.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and inspire engineers to tackle complex technical challenges in EMSP and FinTech, fostering experimentation, hackathons, and innovation.
  • Coach and grow 4 Senior Engineering Managers, building high‑performing teams and clear career paths across the organization.
  • Drive the modernization of our platform and architect the EMSPaaS offering, making strategic technical decisions that balance innovation with pragmatic delivery.
  • Transform the engineering organization into a fast‑paced, innovation‑driven environment that embraces modern practices – from AI and agentic coding to reducing operational burden and fostering a bias for action.
  • Partner with recruiting to build a talent pipeline in a competitive Berlin market and create a compelling employer brand that excites world‑class engineers.
  • Remove blockers, empower teams to make decisions, and create psychological safety while maintaining high standards and accountability.
  • Collaborate closely with product, architecture, and business stakeholders across our European and Japanese markets to align technology strategy with business outcomes.
  • Champion best practices by evolving our software development lifecycle, establishing engineering standards, and advocating for modern development practices that increase velocity and quality.
  • Maintain technical credibility by diving into architecture reviews, complex problem‑solving, and critical technical decisions when the situation demands it.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in software engineering with at least 5 years leading engineering managers and building organizations of 50+ engineers.
  • Strong background in FinTech and cloud technologies (ideally Azure), with hands‑on experience in distributed systems, microservices architecture, and modern development practices.
  • Track record of transforming engineering organizations – inspiring excellence and building excitement.
  • Strategic thinker who balances long‑term vision with short‑term execution, boldness and pragmatism.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, hire, and retain excellent engineers even in competitive markets.
  • Passionate about emerging technologies and practices – AI, agentic coding, platform engineering, developer experience, and continuous experimentation.
  • Hands‑on technical skills – familiar with Java/Kotlin, Spring Boot, cloud architectures, and able to make informed technical decisions.
  • Comfortable in dynamic, fast‑paced environments and bring a bias for action rather than analysis paralysis.
  • Excellent communication skills – influencing without authority, presenting technical strategy to executives, and rallying teams around a shared vision.
