Proxima Fusion

Divertor Physicist

Stellenbeschreibung:

Join to apply for the Divertor Physicist role at Proxima Fusion

Who We Are

At Proxima Fusion, we're driven by a bold mission – to redefine the future of sustainable energy. Our unique concept, built upon the groundbreaking W7-X stellarator and the latest advances in technology, paves the way for commercially viable fusion power plants. What’s more, our work in stellarator optimization, powered by cutting-edge computation and machine learning, is propelling us into uncharted territories of fusion technology. New higher performance design points are unlocked by high temperature superconducting magnets. To fully grasp this huge opportunity, we’re building a team of extremely dedicated and passionate people who come together driving something extraordinary, radically transforming technology in the world.

Your Impact

To sustain fusion-relevant conditions within the confined magnetic geometry of a stellarator, the plasma exhaust system—the divertor—must be carefully designed to channel heat, fusion products, and impurities away from the main plasma and first wall, onto plasma-facing components. The physics and strategy governing this interface between the confined plasma and material boundaries in this complex 3D magnetic topology is intricate, involving non-linear multi-physics dynamics spanning plasma, neutral gas, and material surface processes.

As a Divertor Physicist at Proxima, you will play a crucial role in efforts to model and design divertors for real-world machines that are necessary steps on the path towards commercial fusion power. You will develop and apply theoretical and computational models to understand plasma exhaust and impurity transport, interpreting results from leading experimental facilities, in order to integrate these insights into the next generation of divertors. Your work will involve close engagement with engineers to ensure compatibility with overall device design and reactor-relevant operating scenarios.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with academic partners to develop and apply workflows that characterize divertor performance with respect to one or more of:
    • Magnetic and divertor plate geometry optimisation.
    • Attached and detached heat and particle exhaust loads.
    • Helium and impurity exhaust.
  • Identify, initiate, and lead R&D projects, working closely with industry and scientific partners.
  • Communicate your results and collaborate with engineers to ensure reactor components correctly meet the requirements for effective plasma confinement and control.

Who You Are

  • We are looking for high performers who love challenges and see these as learning opportunities.
  • It is important not to be afraid to experiment, take risks and learn from mistakes. We believe in continuous iterations and getting things done.
  • Bring expertise in simulation modelling and the design of high-heat-flux systems or plasma-facing components.
  • Have a solid background in R&D, preferably with experience in an industrial environment.
  • Hold a postgraduate degree in physics. Plasma physics is preferred but not essential.
  • Proficient in Python, C++, and Fortran.
  • Proficient in modern software development workflows.
  • Proactive in framing problems, as well as proposing and interrogating solutions.

Interview Process

  • Recruiter Interview (30-60 min)
  • Technical Screening (30 min)
  • Technical Panel (3x60 min)
  • CEO call (30 min)

At Proxima Fusion, our mission is bold: making limitless clean energy a reality. To get there, we need a high-performing, diverse team that brings different perspectives, challenges assumptions, and builds together with purpose. We know that diversity of thought and experience leads to better ideas, stronger execution, and a more resilient team. We don’t look at how you identify, what you look like, who you choose to worship or what ethnicity you are. We care about what you can bring to the table.
