The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.
The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Dermatology and Allergology, Director: Prof. Michael Hertl, is currently accepting applications for a Doctoral Researcher/PhD position.
The mission of the multidisciplinary research consortium of the newly established Transregional Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 425 “Desmosomal dysfunction in epithelial barriers” (DEFINE) is to uncover dynamic molecular and cellular mechanisms related to dysfunction of desmosomes. The CRC combines cutting‑edge technologies and translational approaches using patient‑derived samples.
The overall goal of subproject B01 on “Inflammatory signature in pemphigus”, project leader Dr. Michael Hertl, is to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which desmosome dysfunction drives epithelial barrier failure and inflammation in pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Particular focus is placed on the interplay between autoreactive T helper 2 cells and epithelial responses. We will integrate patient‑derived samples, in vitro and ex vivo models, multiomics technologies, and in vivo validation to uncover shared and tissue‑specific mechanisms of immune‑epithelial dysregulation. To verify the findings in patients with PV, we will include age‑matched healthy controls. We will also include patients with the common inflammatory skin disease lichen planus (LP) which shows a Th1‑dominated T cell response against desmosomal autoantigens.
The third‑party‑funded position is offered for a period of 3 years, starting 1 April 2026. It is part‑time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV‑H E 13, 65 %).
Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.
