Energy Management System Engineer for BESS Applications

The Power Conversion Technology Laboratory within Huawei’s Nuremberg Research Center is responsible for Advanced Digital Power Technology Research, Architecture Evolution Design and Strategic Technology Planning. It plays an important role in Huawei Digital Power’s design and development of power converters and control systems for applications such as PV Solar & Battery Energy Storage Field, Data Centers, Electric Vehicles, and Embedded Power Supply.
Your mission
- Provide insights of core technologies for next‑generation stationary energy storage systems in combination with energy management systems, including integration in trading platforms for electricity market participation.
- Provide insights on next‑generation cloud‑ and edge‑based energy management system designs for renewable energy power plants, especially for PV in combination with BESS.
- Provide insights of application‑specific requirements of stationary battery energy storage systems, especially in European markets: district/micro‑grids, C&I, utility‑scale (stand‑alone and co‑located).
- Develop and implement advanced EMS algorithms for energy storage applications (front‑of‑the‑meter and behind‑the‑meter) to collaborate with energy trading platforms.
- Design, simulate and validate control strategies for optimal battery dispatch under multiple market conditions (energy arbitrage, FCR, aFRR, etc.).
- Integrate advanced models for batteries, battery management and power conversion system into ESS solutions to increase ESS revenues.
- Collaborate with hardware and communication technology teams and battery management developers to ensure proper system integration with the power plant controller, the site‑level controllers and the battery management system (BMS).
- Support development of advanced optimization models (linear, nonlinear, AI‑optimization) and forecasting algorithms for multi‑objective energy management.
- Contribute to the design and testing of EMS prototypes using HIL or CHIL environments to validate the algorithm prototype.
- Analyze market and operational data to enhance the EMS logic and decision‑making process.
- Support the development of high‑quality collaborations in Europe and help Huawei maintain long‑term and sustainable relationships with universities and research institutions.
- Responsible for closely collaborating with Huawei Digital Power Headquarter R&D and product teams.
Your areas of expertise
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Python; experience with C++ and Java is a plus.
- Professional experience using Linux operating systems.
- Experience in power system modeling and simulation (e.g., DigSILENT or Modelica).
- Experience in EMS or SCADA development.
- Strong background in optimization, forecasting algorithms, control systems, and power systems.
- Familiar with BESS architectures, components (battery modules/packs/systems, power conversion systems, power plant controllers) and operation as well as grid‑code requirements.
- Understanding of European electricity markets, flexibility services and grid operation is a plus.
- Hands‑on experience with embedded systems, CHIL/HIL testing or EMS development is advantageous.
- Experience in leading project teams with corresponding management skills.
- Good relationship with the top research groups in Europe.
- Willingness to travel internationally (European countries and China).
- Fluent in written and spoken English; Chinese and other European languages are a plus.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills and ability to adapt in a multi‑cultural environment.
