About LMU Munich and Research Environment

LMU Munich is a leading European research university. The Center for Nanoscience (CeNS) and the Nano-Institute Munich provide a dynamic research setting, fostering collaboration across nanoscience, physics, chemistry, and materials science. Munich offers a high quality of life for students and researchers.

Research Topic and Significance

The PhD positions focus on perovskite nanoscience, including the synthesis, characterization, and application of perovskite quantum dots and related nanostructures. Perovskite nanomaterials are promising for optoelectronics and quantum technologies due to their optical properties and tunable electronic characteristics.

Project Details

The PhD positions are distributed among three LMU Nano-Institute groups:

  • Urban Group (2 positions): Design and synthesis of novel perovskite nanomaterials (quantum dots, nanoplatelets); study of size, shape, and surface chemistry effects on optical properties and device performance using ultrafast spectroscopy.
  • Müller-Caspary Group: TEM and 4D-STEM analysis of atomic-scale structures and aging in perovskite nanostructures; development of low-dose imaging methods for beam-sensitive materials.
  • Nickel Group: Development and application of X-ray scattering methods for perovskite nanomaterials; instrumentation development including automation and remote-controlled experiments. Programming skills (e.g., Python) are advantageous.

All projects are funded for three years by the German Research Foundation (DFG), with a preferred start date in early 2026 (flexible).

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in physics, chemistry, nanoscience, or materials science
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for experimental and interdisciplinary research
  • Hands-on experience in at least one of the following areas: synthetic chemistry, microscopy, nanomaterials, or X-ray methods
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team

Applicants should be driven by scientific curiosity, eager to collaborate with leading researchers, and prepared to contribute to high-impact publications and international conferences.

Application Process

LMU Munich is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive research environment. Prepare the following documents as a single PDF:

  • Short motivation letter explaining your excitement for the position and interest in this project
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting relevant experience
  • Academic transcripts (BSc and MSc)
  • Names of 1–2 academic references

Application materials should be sent with the subject line “PhD Application – Perovskite QDs”.
