Overview

PhD position in Atomic Physics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany), in collaboration with the Helmholtz Institute Jena and the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. The project focuses on high-precision mass spectrometry of highly charged ions, with primary experimental work at the GSI facility in Darmstadt. The position offers exposure to state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration in atomic, quantum, and nuclear physics.

Responsibilities

• Design, construct, and commission a new Penning trap mass spectrometer.
• Apply cryogenic detectors for single-particle detection in traps and beam lines.
• Operate Penning traps, manage vacuum systems, cryogenic technology, ion optics, and detection units.
• Analyze experimental data and present results at conferences and workshops.
• Plan and execute measurement campaigns.

Candidate Profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics or closely related field with excellent academic results.
• Strong motivation, independence, reliability, and meticulous laboratory work.
• Practical hands-on experience in experimental work; programming (e.g., Python) and electronics knowledge preferred or willingness to learn.
• Excellent teamwork and communication abilities.
• Good written and spoken English; German knowledge is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and presenting research findings to the scientific community.
