Global application engineer - Transfer Switching Applications

Overview

Chapter Lead, Customer Application Engineers. ABB helps industries operate at high performance and increase efficiency, productivity and sustainability. This position reports to Chapter Lead, Customer Application Engineers and involves developing new applications for mission-critical power infrastructure where system uptime is non-negotiable. In this role you will bridge customers and developers, translating customer needs into reliable and efficient solutions across mission-critical installations. A solid understanding of transfer switching logics and coordination in main distribution systems is required. Knowledge of energy transition segments and selectivity requirements is a plus.

The role has a dual nature:

• Act as a key reference for both customers and the ABB sales force in mission-critical power applications. Build and maintain a strong network to anticipate market trends and provide ABB with a competitive edge.
• Translate customer challenges and needs into clear technical requirements to support the development of new solutions.

Preferred location: Europe. Work model: hybrid.

Your responsibilities

• Engaging directly with customers to understand their applications, requirements, and challenges.
• Collect and transform market and application insights into practical solutions, standards, and knowledge transfer for R&D colleagues.
• Analyzing system architectures and operating logics to propose concrete solutions tailored to customer needs.
• Delivering technical documentation, new configurations, and integration guidelines in our application configurator and digital tools.
• Driving innovation by identifying new opportunities and configurations that strengthen our product and solution portfolio.

Your background

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s degree is a plus).
• 5+ years of industrial experience in power distribution applications, ideally with direct involvement in transfer switch systems, selectivity studies, and protection coordination.
• Solid understanding of main distribution architectures, logics for automatic transfer, and selectivity design principles.
• Experience engaging with customers from technical discussions to solution proposals.
• Strong ability to translate customer requirements into structured solutions, documentation, and application tools.
• Excellent communication skills, with fluency in English.
