Grimlore Games is looking for a seasoned, visionary Senior System Designer to join our ranks in Munich (or remotely). We are currently deep in the development of Titan Quest II , an ambitious sequel set in the legendary landscapes of ancient Greece.
As a Senior Designer, you aren’t just adjusting numbers; you are the architect of the player’s journey. You will own the core systems that define the “feel” of our game—classes, abilities, and progression—ensuring that every click and every skill point spent provides a rewarding, innovative experience for fans of the genre.
Position Summary: Senior System Designer
Category Details
Company Grimlore Games (THQ Nordic / Embracer Group)
Job Title Senior System Designer (m/f/d)
Primary Project Titan Quest II
Salary Range €65,000 – €88,000 (Based on seniority and specialization)
Job Type Full-Time, Permanent
Location Munich, Germany / Remote Work Possible
Key Tools Unreal Engine, Confluence, Miro, Scripting (LUA/AngelScript)
At the Senior level, you are the designated “Owner” of our Class and Ability Systems . This is not a passive role. You will drive the creative and technical direction of how players interact with the world of Titan Quest II.
- Class Design: Define the identity, strengths, and weaknesses of player classes.
- Ability Ecosystems: Design, prototype, and balance active and passive abilities, ensuring a “power fantasy” that remains challenging and fair.
- Progression Logic: Oversee the mathematical and psychological frameworks of player growth, including talent trees, stat scaling, and endgame loops.
2. Technical Implementation & Scripting
We believe designers should be empowered to realize their visions directly.
- Unreal Engine Integration: You will work directly within Unreal Engine to implement gameplay systems.
- Scripting: Utilize scripting languages (such as AngelScript or LUA) to define complex AI behaviors, skill interactions, and environmental triggers.
- Balancing & Mathematics: Apply rigorous mathematical models to game balancing. You will manage spreadsheets and simulation data to ensure that no single build trivializes the content, while still allowing for “broken” (yet intended) synergy.
3. Leadership & Stakeholder Management
As a Senior, you are a bridge between departments.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: You will act as the primary point of contact for your systems, coordinating with Artists for visual effects, Audio for sound cues, and Programmers for backend architecture.
- Strike Team Leadership: Lead small, agile “strike teams” focused on specific features, ensuring that deadlines are met and the creative vision remains uncompromised.
- Mentorship: You are a role model for our Junior Designers. You will provide constructive feedback, share best practices in documentation, and help them navigate the complexities of AAA development.
4. Documentation & Communication
- The Source of Truth: Maintain high-quality, living documentation on Confluence and Miro . Your specs must be clear enough for a programmer to implement and an artist to visualize.
- Evangelism: Present your designs to the wider studio and occasionally to external stakeholders or the community in an engaging, clear, and professional manner.
- Proven Track Record: At least two shipped titles as a Game, Level, or Narrative Designer. Experience in a Senior capacity is highly preferred.
- ARPG Expertise: You must be more than a fan; you should be a scholar of the genre. We expect a deep familiarity with the mechanics of Diablo, Path of Exile, and the original Titan Quest.
- Systemic Thinking: Ability to visualize how a single change in a “Class Passive” will ripple through the entire economy and combat balance of a 100-hour game.
Technical & Soft Skills
- Mathematical Proficiency: A solid understanding of game balancing, probability, and combat mathematics.
- Iterative Mindset: You are comfortable with “killing your darlings.” You can take a design from a rough concept to a polished feature through constant testing and criticism.
- Communication: Exceptional written and spoken English. You can explain the “Why” behind a design, not just the “What.”
- Engine Mastery: Deep experience with Unreal Engine (Blueprints and C++ interface).
- Scripting Background: Previous work with AngelScript, LUA, or Python for gameplay logic.
- Genre Experience: Direct experience working on an Action RPG or a Live Service title.
- Cultural Integration: German language skills are a benefit for those choosing to work from our Munich office.
- Legacy & Innovation: We are stewards of the Titan Quest legacy. You will have the chance to redefine a classic for a modern audience.
- Autonomy with Support: We trust our Seniors. You will have the freedom to own your systems while being supported by the resources of THQ Nordic.
- Flexibility: Whether you prefer the vibrant culture of Munich or the comfort of your home office, we offer true hybrid and remote flexibility.
- A Positive Force: We pride ourselves on a studio culture that is professional yet friendly, avoiding the “crunch” mentality in favor of sustainable, high-quality development.
- Growth: As the studio grows, so do you. You will have a direct impact on the processes and culture of Grimlore Games.
The Industry Context: The Evolving ARPG
Action RPGs are currently undergoing a renaissance. Players are demanding more depth, better “crunch” in combat, and more transparent progression systems. At Grimlore, we aren’t just following the pack; we are looking to innovate on the traditional formula.
As a Senior System Designer, you will tackle the challenge of Meaningful Choice . In an era where players have access to endless guides and “meta-builds,” your job is to create a system where experimentation is rewarded and every player feels they have crafted a unique path through ancient Greece. This requires a designer who is equal parts mathematician, psychologist, and storyteller.
How to Apply
Please submit your CV , a Portfolio (showing system design documentation or implemented features), and a Cover Letter . In your cover letter, tell us about a specific system in an ARPG that you found particularly well-designed—or one that you would have fixed—and why.
Grimlore Games is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
