Our client is a leading development finance organisation specialising in providing financial solutions for property developers and investors.
They display a strong track record, expert knowledge, and commitment to delivering exceptional service across Europe and are currently seeking to expand their team and geographic footprint with the appointment of a Head of Risk for their new German business.
This person will play a critical role in the credit underwriting of German bridging and development loans, overseeing the execution and portfolio management of the same. This role requires strong analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work closely with clients and internal stakeholders to find effective solutions. Given that the headquarters are in the UK, English Language fluency is a requirement.
Responsibilities
- Have overall responsibility for the local credit risk management function and oversee all underwriting, portfolio management, and risk operations processes.
- Advise, review, and sign off on all key underwriting documents (e.g., credit applications, HoTs, credit minutes, valuation, title, and construction DD).
- Present new credit applications to the Underwriting Committee.
- Advise, review, and sign off on key portfolio management documents (e.g., QS reports, portfolio manager reports, sales updates).
- Review and improve the underwriting, risk, and credit policies, processes, frameworks, and templates and ensure that these are understood and adhered to across the German business.
- Ensure adherence to the company’s underwriting, anti‑bribery, AML, cash control, portfolio monitoring, and other relevant policies and training requirements.
- Take responsibility for all post‑drawn‑down tasks.
- Responsible for all aspects of portfolio management, including the execution of debt recovery strategies.
- Responsible for portfolio reporting, including watch lists and follow‑up actions, including the recommendation of recovery strategies.
- Professionally engage with HQ and funding partners on a day‑to‑day basis with an ability to articulate key elements of any situation clearly and concisely.
- Able to work with complex spreadsheets, including IRR models.
- Responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the local treasury function, ensuring optimal allocation of funding and ensuring that the portfolio operates within predefined treasury parameters.
Required experience, skills, and characteristics
- 10‑15 years of experience in real estate bridging and development finance in Germany.
- Depth of experience that translates into clear, appropriate, and effective structuring of deals.
- Excellent numerical ability and understanding of Excel.
- Exceptional ability to communicate complexity in a clear and simple manner.
- English Language fluency is required.
- Strong bridging and development finance and credit risk experience, and thorough knowledge of all processes involved, including construction and debt recovery.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Demonstrates confidence in addressing unstructured and new situations and willingly takes on new challenges.
- Hands‑on experience is required, given that the team will be small in the early days.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Team player who deals effectively and openly with colleagues and clients.
