Offer Description

The University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking candidates for the earliest possible appointment of a

Junior Professor of Slavonic Linguistics
(W1 with tenure track to W3)

The position is available subject to budgetary regulations. We are looking for an academic, who is able to represent research and teaching in the field of Slavonic linguistics, and who is recognised through relevant publications and teaching experience. Candidates’ area of specialisation should lie in Polish or Russian linguistics and they should have a further research focus in sociolinguistics, or in the field of contact linguistics and multilingualism. As the Department not only specialises in the above-named languages, but also offers classes in Bohemian and Ukrainian Studies, it is desirable that candidates also have knowledge of the Czech and Ukrainian languages.

We expect the holder of the position to play a role in the organisation of Greifswald’s Polonicum, as well as in the Department’s and Faculty’s research activities, contributing, in particular, towards the interdisciplinary projects that fall under the research domain “Cultures of the Baltic Sea Region”. The professorial chair will also be expected to continue the expansion of partnership relations with the Slavic countries and their academic institutions.

Furthermore, the successful candidate’s tasks initially include teaching classes in the degree course B.A. Slavonic Studies as well as the teacher-training degree courses for Polish or Russian. Later on, they will contribute towards all of the degree courses on offer at the Department of Slavonic Studies and the classes taught by the Department of Slavonic Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities’ interdisciplinary degree courses. Teaching obligations initially comprise four contact hours per week (SWS) - these will be increased to six following a positive interim evaluation.

First experience in the acquisition of external funding and in academic committees is desirable. The future holder of the position will be expected to be willing to teach courses in English.

The University of Greifswald supports and demands family-friendly leadership.

The required qualifications are defined in § 62(1) Landeshochschulgesetz- LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree, teaching aptitude and academic excellence, which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree (summa cum laude or magna cum laude). The doctorate must have been completed in the field of Polish or Russian Studies. If you have worked as a teaching and/or research assistant or associate, or as a graduate assistant prior to or after obtaining your doctorate, the times in which you completed your doctorate and in which you were employed may not exceed a total of nine years.

In accordance with § 62(2) LHG M-V, junior professors are appointed for a period of three years as temporary civil servants (Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit). In case of a positive evaluation after the third year, the contract is extended for a further three years.

The position is provided with a tenure track (W3). Later appointment to the permanent W3 professorship requires the position holder to meet the requirements for appointment, which is determined as part of a corresponding appointment procedure - the Tenure Evaluation (§§ 62a(1) LHG M-V).Evidence of a second area of research focus (Polish or Russian Studies) must be proven in the Tenure Evaluation.

This vacancy is open to all persons, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Thus, applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Women are specifically encouraged to apply for this position.

Severely disabled applicants with the same professional and personal qualifications will also be given preference.

Unfortunately, application costs (e.g. travel expenses for interviews) will not be reimbursed by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
