Lead Engineer - Power Electronics

Location: Aachen Germany

About the Research and the Project

In this role you will execute research and development projects to address modern power grid issues with ever‑growing DERs, EVs, and smart loads. The Lead Engineer will report to the Senior Technology Manager, Power Electronics, Eaton Research Labs in Aachen/Bonn, identify key technical gaps, and influence the technology roadmap for Eaton’s power systems products and services. This work will help businesses across Eaton solve critical problems and uncover new opportunities.

Primary Function

  • Develop innovative power electronics solutions for AC and DC systems, helping Eaton’s products differentiate in the emerging market.
  • Design, control, integrate, and validate power conversion and semiconductor‑based protection components for stationary grids, vehicle, and aerospace applications.
  • Integrate innovative concepts on device or subsystem level into prototypes, feasibility studies, specifications, and larger systems.
  • Contribute to power electronics module design, including power semiconductor selection, evaluation, prototyping, and topology studies.

Further Goals / Responsibilities

  • Serve as technical and/or project lead in technology development and demonstration projects.
  • Analyze, model, and simulate power electronics modules from device to subsystem level.
  • Simulate power conversion and protection circuits in MATLAB/Simulink/Plecs and assist with component robustness validation.
  • Stay current with the latest power electronics, PCB, and electronics circuit technologies and apply knowledge to applications.
  • Innovate, invent, and challenge state‑of‑the‑art design and process by securing intellectual property through patents and publications.

We Would Like You To Bring

  • Ph.D. degree (or Ph.D. candidate close to graduation) in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience in designing and prototyping power converters (bidirectional/unidirectional DC/DC, multi‑port), WBG technology, protection devices (SSCB, HCB), cooling systems, and packaging.
  • Proven low/mid‑voltage DC power conversion and power systems engineering experience, including specifications, application definition, technical concept design, prototype building, testing, and documentation.
  • Experience with simulation software: MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS, Atrium.
  • Experience in WBG power devices and applications.

What Skills Would Be Evaluated

  • Fast actuation, active filtering, gate driver design, sensing, and advanced cooling technologies.
  • Design, control, and testing of MVDC and LVDC components and grids.
  • Real‑time simulations and hardware‑in‑the‑loop (OPAL‑RT, RTDS, Typhoon).
  • Field and lab testing of inverters, energy storage systems, power converters, and controllers.
  • Full working proficiency in English (German highly desirable). Collaboration orientation and ability to succeed in a flat hierarchy.
