Operational Engineer – HV Substations (m/f/d)
Location: Hamburg, Germany (Hybrid)
Travel: Approx. 20–40% across Germany

Our client is a well-established and fast-growing renewable energy asset owner headquartered in Northern Germany. With a long-standing presence in the German market and several hundred employees, the company invests in, develops, builds, and operates large-scale solar power plants nationwide. As all new projects connect to the high-voltage grid, the substation function is a growing and strategically important area of the business.
Role Overview
This is a hands-on operational engineering role focused exclusively on high-voltage substations . The position sits on the owner/operator side and covers the full operational lifecycle of substations connected to utility-scale solar plants.
The emphasis is on preventive and condition-based maintenance , asset health monitoring, and long-term reliability, not construction or purely reactive fault response. You will act as the technical owner of substation operations , working closely with an external operating company while retaining responsibility for performance, asset condition, and operational strategy.

Key Responsibilities
- Technical inventory and condition assessments of 110 kV substations (up to 150 MVA)
- Development of preventive and condition-based maintenance strategies
- Analysis of operational data and asset statistics to prevent failures and optimise lifecycle performance
- Definition of repair, upgrade, and replacement priorities, particularly during the first year
- Oversight and coordination of external operating and maintenance service providers
- Creation and maintenance of asset lifecycle and spare parts strategies
- Establishment and upkeep of asset valuation, performance, and reliability statistics
- Development and implementation of monitoring concepts to support proactive maintenance
- Management of operational interfaces with external stakeholders (e.g. authorities, service partners)
- Maintenance of audit, compliance, and operational documentation
Your Profile
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a comparable technical qualification
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of HV substations or similar grid-connected assets (5+ years preferred)
- Strong operational mindset with experience in active, preventive maintenance , not only reactive work
- Comfortable taking technical ownership and steering external service providers
- Valid Class B driving licence and willingness to travel within Germany
- Fluent German (written and spoken)
- Structured, independent working style with a high level of reliability
- Confident communicator with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
