PhD position (m/f/d) – Chemistry and Physics of Interface (CPI) – University of Freiburg

Duration: 4 years (full‑time 65 %) – start as soon as possible.

In the framework of the DFG‑funded Research Training Group “BioBuild – Bio‑inspired Materials and Systems for Responsive Building Components”, we offer a PhD position (E 13 TV‑L, 65 %) with a duration of four years.

Responsibilities

  • Develop bio‑inspired hygromorphic actuators that respond to heat and humidity.
  • Design, synthesize, and characterize crosslinked hygromorphic materials that can be recycled at the end of their life cycle.
  • Fabricate actuators and perform comprehensive material and performance testing.
  • Collaborate closely with other PhDs in the lab and participate in broader interdisciplinary projects.
  • Contribute to the development of a sustainable building materials program.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in polymer science, organic chemistry or related fields.
  • Hands‑on laboratory experience in organic synthesis.
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry and thermodynamics is a plus.
  • Strong independence, initiative, and creativity in research.
  • Good proficiency in English (oral and written).
