PhD Student, RAISE Project (f/m/div)

Position: part‑time (75%) in the department “Optical and Rocket Soundings” at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP). Duration: 3 years, start as soon as possible. Salary: EG 13 TV‑L (~40 000 €/year). The fixed‑term contract is based on 2 WissZeitVG.

The institute advances scientific knowledge of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere through expertise in atmospheric physics, instrumentation, analysis, and modeling. Your Tasks

Conduct research in experimental atmospheric physics. Focus on optical remote sensing of the atmosphere up to the edge of space (mesosphere and lower thermosphere). In the RAISE project, set up a multi‑metal lidar, perform quantum remote sensing of selected metal atoms, and evaluate data to distinguish natural variability from anthropogenic effects. Work with dye laser systems, optics, spectroscopy and software development.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in physics, engineering, environmental sciences, or related discipline.
Basic knowledge and initial experience with experimental methods such as spectroscopy and laser physics.
Fundamental programming skills (Python, Julia, C/C++).
Willingness to work independently and contribute to lidar soundings during nights or weekends, in accordance with applicable working laws.
Communication skills for presenting research results.
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
