Job Title: Contract PLC / Automation Deployment EngineerLocation: Can be based anywhere in the EU — must be flexible to travelContract Type: Freelance / Contract
Role Overview:We are seeking a Contract PLC / Automation Deployment Engineer to manage the end-to-end deployment lifecycle of industrial automation projects — from design and configuration through commissioning and validation. This role combines PLC programming, controls integration, and mechatronic system deployment with a strong understanding of industrial networking and communication systems.
The ideal candidate is a multidisciplinary engineer with deep knowledge of mechatronics, PLC systems, and industrial network architectures, capable of delivering safe, reliable, and scalable automation solutions across diverse industrial environments.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead automation deployment projects involving PLCs, motion control, robotics, and industrial networking systems from initiation to completion — ensuring technical integrity, scope, schedule, and quality standards are achieved.Design, configure, and commission control systems, including PLC programming (ladder logic, function block, structured text), HMI/SCADA integration, and validation of system performance, safety, and functionality.Implement and maintain communication networks between PLCs, field devices, and higher-level systems using protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, Profibus, and OPC UA.Diagnose and resolve complex system issues, leveraging structured problem-solving and root cause analysis across mechanical, electrical, software, and communication layers.Collaborate cross-functionally with equipment vendors, system integrators, IT/OT specialists, and internal engineering teams to align technical requirements and ensure seamless execution.Develop and maintain documentation — including control architecture diagrams, I/O lists, network topologies, functional design specifications, and test procedures.Support system optimization and continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance reliability, maintainability, and scalability of deployed automation systems.Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering knowledge-sharing in PLC programming, mechatronics integration, and industrial networking best practices.
Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Controls, or Automation Engineering (or equivalent experience).6+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or PLC deployment for large-scale projects.Proven hands-on experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley / Rockwell, Siemens, or equivalent platforms).Strong working knowledge of industrial communication networks and protocols (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, OPC UA, etc.), including network configuration, diagnostics, and cybersecurity considerations.Experience integrating SCADA, HMI, robotics, and process control systems within automated environments.Solid understanding of mechatronic systems — sensors, actuators, motion control, feedback loops, and system dynamics.Demonstrated capability in root-cause analysis, fault diagnosis, and system optimization.Excellent communication, teamwork, and stakeholder management skills in multidisciplinary environments.Willingness and flexibility to travel across the EU to support deployments, testing, and commissioning activities.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)Knowledge of industrial safety standards (IEC 61508, ISO 13849) and validation processes.Familiarity with industrial IoT / digitalization initiatives (edge computing, data analytics, cloud integration).Experience with network simulation or system emulation tools for pre-deployment testing.Certification or formal training in PLC platforms (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens) or industrial networking (Cisco Industrial, Profinet).
