The Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching bei München invites applications for a three-year postdoctoral position working with Dr. Natalia Lahén on Computational Galaxy Evolution.
The ERC-funded ILMATAR project focuses on the formation of globular clusters and the first galaxies in high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations. The selected candidate will develop numerical techniques for the simulations and we are looking for candidates with experience or interest in numerical modeling of stellar evolution, star clusters and galaxy formation and evolution.
The successful candidate will join the vibrant and cross-disciplinary research environment of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics and its neighbouring astrophysical research institutes in Garching that offer interactions with other postdoctoral and senior scholars, PhD students, workshops, lecture series, conferences, mentorship and training programs. The postdoc will also benefit from the extensive computational resources in Germany and on campus, including the Max Planck Computing and Data Facility and the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre.
The appointment will be for three years. Applicants should have a PhD in astrophysics, physics, computer science, or related fields by the start of the appointment. The position includes full benefits and support for travel and research expenses. Salary is paid at local civil service rates.
The position is available from September 2026, but the starting date is negotiable. Interested candidates are invited to apply online by January 15, 2026.
