We are looking for a talented scientist with a passion for the study of motor control and brain stimulation. The aim of this project, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), is to test a new mechanism of action of deep brain stimulation (DBS).
The person in this position will work in the Department of Neurology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The position can either be perceived as a pure research position or combined with specialist training in neurology.
The dynamics of the networks associated with the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including the basal ganglia and cortical structures, are still poorly understood. At the same time, DBS has become a popular treatment option for advanced cases, often controlling many of the motor symptoms. However, it is not clear how DBS modulates networks in the brain and which modulations are related to symptoms and side effects. In this ERC project, we are pursuing a completely new approach: weak electric fields. We use computer models and clinical studies to investigate the role of weak cortical fields in the success of DBS.
