Position Overview

In the collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and the University of Helsinki, the Center for Social Inequalities in Population Health invites applications for one or more full‑time post‑doctoral researchers. Researchers with a PhD in demography, sociology, statistics, epidemiology, public health, biology, anthropology, economics, computer science or allied fields are welcomed. The successful candidate(s) will focus on the role of genetic factors in shaping health inequalities and/or develop novel methods for leveraging genetic data, while also being open to other research themes of the Center and the Department of Social Demography.

Responsibilities

The post‑doctoral researcher will develop an independent research agenda within the Center, contribute skills to ongoing projects, and collaborate across the Center’s joint initiatives.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree (or be expected to finish in 2026). Advanced knowledge of quantitative methods and statistical software such as R, Python or Stata is required. Creativity, self‑drive and collaboration are essential.

Contract and Salary

Contract: up to 4 years. Salary commensurate with experience, starting at approximately 64,900 EUR gross per year for recent PhD graduates and up to 74,600 EUR gross per year for more senior scientists, based on the German public sector salary structure (Öffentlicher Dienst, TVöD Bund; EG14/1‑3).

Location and Relocation

The position is based at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, with residency expected. Support for relocation costs is available, and opportunities exist to work with the Helsinki unit that hosts a unique Finnish data set.
