Offer Description

The Faculty of Medicine of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and the University Hospital Frankfurt, Centre for Surgery in the Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics (Director: Prof Dr med I. Marzi), invites applications for the following position as civil servant or public employee starting as soon as possible:

Professor (W2, tenure-track) for Degenerative Joint Diseases and Specialized Endoprosthetics

This is a tenure-track position for an initial six-year term. If tenure is approved at the end of the term, the position will be made permanent and promotion to the rank of Full Professor (W3) will be granted.

The professorship will represent and develop the designated focus area of Specialised Endoprosthetics in a senior consultant position within the Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics at the Centre for Surgery in clinical practice, research, and teaching. The required scope of services encompasses elective, minimally invasive hip and knee joint endoprosthetics as well as prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. The Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics is a university supra-regional trauma centre within the Trauma Network DGU®, SAV clinic of the DGUV, Geriatric Trauma Centre DGU®, and Spine Centre for Maximum Care DWG®. The Department has access to all diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical capabilities, including modern imaging and navigation. The department's research priorities lie in polytrauma research, bone and soft tissue regeneration, and osteoarthritis research. Within the Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics, the advertised professorship will represent specialised endoprosthetics of the knee and hip joints as well as conservative therapy for degenerative conditions. Demonstrated expertise in modern, innovative endoprosthetics and basic research on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis is required. Close cooperation and translational collaboration with the department's osteoarthritis research and movement laboratory and trauma laboratory, as well as within the Medical Faculty and Goethe University, are expected.

Prerequisites for application include a completed university degree in medicine, medical licence, doctorate, habilitation or equivalent academic achievements (which may have been obtained through a junior professorship or outside the university sector), teaching experience, peer-reviewed third-party funding (DFG, BMBF or similar), and outstanding scientific publications. Board certification in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery with additional qualification in Special Orthopedic Surgery is required; certification as an osteologist from the DVO would be desirable. We expect experience in university-level teaching and excellent didactic abilities, preferably evidenced through qualified teaching evaluations. Willingness to participate in curriculum development and academic self-governance is required. The clinical duties associated with the professorship will be regulated through a service contract with the University Hospital Frankfurt, including appropriate fixed and variable remuneration components.

The formal hiring requirements are defined in sections 67, 68 and 70 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz).

In particular, we are welcoming applications by qualified women and people with a migrant background. At Goethe University, a special emphasis is placed on creating and sustaining a family-friendly work and research environment. Where applicants are otherwise equally qualified, preference is given to candidates with disabilities or equivalent. The same applies to women in fields in which they are under-represented.
