About the Role

As the Programme Manager, Open Access Transformation you will play a pivotal role in operationalizing Springer Nature’s Open Access Transition strategy. Reporting to the Director, OA Transformation, you will be responsible for coordinating and driving the execution of cross-functional initiatives that support the company’s OA growth and transition.

This will include acting as a central point of contact between strategic leadership and delivery teams. The Programme Manager ensures that OA-related projects are well-defined, resourced, and tracked to completion.

This role requires a strong grasp of project management principles, excellent stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to translate strategic objectives into actionable plans. You will work across publishing, sales, product, technology, and operations teams to ensure alignment with OA priorities, facilitate governance and reporting structures, and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs).

You will be highly organized, proactive and comfortable working in a dynamic, matrixed environment. In this position you will contribute to building internal awareness and understanding of OA transformation, helping teams navigate change and adopt new ways of working.

This is a high-impact role that supports Springer Nature’s mission to lead the global transition to Open Access publishing.

Role Responsibilities

  • Programme & Project Coordination: Support OA transformation programmes by managing projects across publishing, sales, product, and technology teams, and provide strategic OA transition guidance when needed.
  • Track progress, risks, and dependencies, ensuring alignment with OA transformation goals.
  • Maintain project documentation, timelines, and reporting dashboards.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Facilitate communication between OA leadership and internal teams.
  • Support the development of communication materials and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate meetings, webinars, and workshops to promote OA awareness and education.

Operational Support

  • Assist in the development and rollout of governance structures and communication channels.
  • Support the Director in preparing for product councils, steering committees, and strategic planning sessions.
  • Help ensure OA priorities are reflected across team roadmaps and OKRs.

Data & KPI Support

  • Collaborate with analytics and data teams to monitor OA KPIs relevant to projects.
  • Support the interpretation and visualization of performance metrics (e.g., revenue per article, usage targets).
  • Contribute to the development of tools and templates for tracking OA progress.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience in science, technology and medical publishing, with strong knowledge of sales or publishing.
  • Proven track record in project or programme management.
  • Familiarity with cross-functional collaboration in matrix organizations.
  • Experience of responding to change and growth.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities, alongside the ability to create memorable, clear, and influential presentations.
  • Strong influencing and collaboration skills at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Excel.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
  • Team-oriented, proactive, and adaptable.
  • Problem solving and intellectual curiosity, and a real desire to find better answers to difficult problems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (required).

Desirable

  • Formal project management training or certification (e.g. PRINCE2, Agile, PMP).
  • Experience using project management tools (e.g., Asana, Trello, Smartsheet, MS Planner).
