R&D Mechanical Designer (m/f/d)

Your responsibilities

We are actively seeking a skilled and highly motivated R&D Mechanical Designer to join our dynamic team. As an integral member of our R&D Team, you will be responsible for the concept, design and verification of new hardware in the area of photonics micro‑assembly & testing machines. We serve international clients across diverse sectors, and we combine cutting‑edge engineering with hands‑on implementation and global collaboration.

  • Design and engineer custom modules, components, assemblies, or complete systems for photonics micro‑assembly and testing.
  • Develop, improve, and optimize existing systems with respect to performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost.
  • Perform mechanical systems sizing, material, tolerance, and manufacturing process selection.
  • Conduct creative brainstorming sessions and develop innovative design solutions for technical challenges that have not yet been solved.
  • Use mechanical and thermal simulations to analyze the behavior and optimize the design.
  • Produce 2D and 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, parts lists (BOMs), and full documentation.
  • Support machine installation, commissioning, and final acceptance testing.
  • Participate in project meetings with internal teams and international clients; communicate design progress and design decisions.
  • Work closely with cross‑functional teams: operational design, systems engineering, automation, electrical, production, and logistics.

Your profile

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field
  • 3–5 years of experience in mechanical design, ideally in special machine construction, optics or precision engineering
  • Strong skills in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks or OnShape) and a good understanding of manufacturing methods, materials, and tolerances
  • Experience with mechanical/thermal simulations and familiarity with PDM/PLM systems
  • Hands‑on mentality and strong problem‑solving skills
  • Independent, detail‑oriented and goal‑driven working style
  • Strong communication skills in English (B2+) and German, with the ability to work effectively in international project settings
  • Flexible and resilient, thriving in a dynamic R&D environment
