Research Assistant - PhD Candidate (f/m/d)

(salary group EG13 TV-L ,100 %, 39.2 hours/week )

for a fixed term of 3 years

The position is fixed-term for the purpose of academic qualification in accordance with § 2 (1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG). Accordingly, only applicants who still have available qualification periods under § 2 (1) WissZeitVG can be considered. The position is suitable for part-time work.

The Department of Communication Engineering has many years of expertise in the research and development of communications systems, algorithms and signal processing methods. Through participation in programs of the German Research Foundation (DFG), cooperative projects of the European Union (EU), European Space Agency (ESA), and German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), as well as industrial projects, where the results of basic research are directly applied in the development and standardization of technologies for mobile communications (6G), satellite and aircraft communication, medical technology, and industrial radio applications. The research activities of the department include basic research, application-oriented research, and -in particular- SDR implementation and testing of the developed concepts in its own indoor laboratories and outdoor test field.

Description

The tasks include carrying out independent research in the following areas:

  • Application-oriented research on concepts and technologies for 6G, also in cooperation with (inter)national research institutes and companies
  • Setup, running, and further development of the indoor and outdoor experimental facilities of the department with base stations, rovers, drones, and satellites for researching 6G with a focus on non-terrestrial/3D networks.
  • Real-time software implementation and evaluation of 6G baseband technologies for use with software-defined radios (SDRs), e.g., Ettus N310.
  • Integration and startup of open-source platforms for 5G/6G systems, e.g., srsSRS RAN and OpenAirInterface.
  • Enhancing the testbed with state-of-the art equipment, e.g., accelerators.

Personal Qualifications

  • Very good degree (master's/university diploma) in communications engineering/information technology, technical computer science, applied mathematics, or related engineering or natural sciences.
  • Very good knowledge of software implementation algorithms.
  • In-depth knowledge in one or more of the following areas: communications engineering (baseband, resource management), signal processing, machine learning/artificial intelligence.
  • First experience with software-defined radios (Ettus USRP) and GNU Radio.
  • Good experience in programming/development environments (Python/MATLAB/C).
  • Knowledge of 5G PHY and MAC according to the 3GPP standard would be a plus.
  • Strong proficiency in spoken and written English (CEF level B1).

This position requires a strong interest in independent research, a highly independent and meticulous approach to work, a high level of motivation to work in transdisciplinary research projects, and excellent teamwork and organizational skills.
