The Dahlem Center for Complex Quantum Systems (DCCQS) at Freie Universitaet Berlin invites applications for a research assistant position (praedoc) (m/f/d) in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, with a focus on spin transport and spintronics. This position will be funded through the Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 227 “Ultrafast Spin Dynamics”.

The Dahlem Center is an exciting forum that encourages the exchange of ideas and promotes collaboration between established and young scientists within Germany and around the world ( The Center’s research focus is quantum theoretical solid state physics in its entirety.

The goal of the Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 227 “Ultrafast Spin Dynamics” is to establish a fundamental understanding of ultrafast spin dynamics and lay the groundwork for spin-based information technology operating at THz clock rates. The DFG-funded CRC / TRR 227 of Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) and Martin‑Luther‑Universität Halle‑Wittenberg (MLU), along with other participating institutions, will receive funding for the third funding period 2026 - 2029.

Job Description

The position involves research in the field of theoretical physics, with a focus on time‑dependent dynamics of transport of spin and orbital angular momentum. The research project is part of the Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 227 “Ultrafast Spin Dynamics”, subproject B03, project leader Prof. Dr. Piet Brouwer (

There is an opportunity to earn a doctorate within the framework the externally funded research project. The position is initially limited until the end of the project, December 31, 2029.

Requirements

Applicants should have a M.Sc. degree in theoretical physics and must meet the requirements for admission to the doctoral program of the Department of Physics at Freie Universität Berlin.

Desirable

Excellent knowledge of theoretical solid‑state physics.
