Join to apply for the Research associate for robot-/AI-based laboratory automation (f/m/x) role at Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) . The Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) is one of the largest practice-oriented higher education institutions in Bavaria, covering a wide spectrum of subjects. We support around 9,300 students in more than 65 degree programmes and were certified as a family-friendly institute in 2022.

The Center for Robotics (CERI) and the Institute of Medical Engineering Schweinfurt (IMES) collaborate on a research project on intelligent lab automation, funded by the federal government. The project aims to develop robotic and AI solutions for laboratory processes in precision medicine.

This full‑time position (40 hours per week ) is a fixed‑term project contract ending on 30 September 2029 and will be based in Schweinfurt . We are looking for a candidate who can contribute to an interdisciplinary team covering chemistry, biology, AI, and engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptual design and implementation of an automated process to synthesize lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for transport of modern active agents and vaccines.
  • Cooperate with an automation engineer in design, planning, and programming of a robot-based system for the production of medical nanoparticles.
  • Participate in an interdisciplinary team that includes chemistry, biology, AI, and engineering to analyze experimental data with external research institutions.
  • Develop AI tools for analysis and optimization of the automated production process: train multi‑parameter models, design experiments, and apply Design of Experiments (DOE) methods.
  • Create a database system for automated, structured, and secure storage of process and experimental data used for AI‑based optimization.
  • Publish results in scientific journals and present them at national and international conferences and workshops.
  • Co‑develop a qualification and education concept for students and professionals at the interface of life sciences and engineering.
  • Supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses or project papers.

Employment requirements

  • Successfully completed a graduate degree programme (e.g., master’s degree or German university diploma) or a doctorate, preferably in robotics, artificial intelligence, computer science, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in one or more of the following research areas: robot‑assisted production systems, active learning, machine learning, design of experiments (DOE), database systems.
  • Programming skills, especially in robotics, AI/ML, and databases.
  • Knowledge of laboratory automation is an advantage.
  • Good communication and social skills.

Remuneration and Eligibility

Recruitment and remuneration are governed by the collective bargaining agreement for the public service of the states (TV‑L) with all usual public‑sector benefits. Eligible applicants will be remunerated according to pay grade 13 TV- L if all conditions are met.
