The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at the University of Hamburg and DESY. We invite applications for a doctoral research associate working on particle acceleration in neutron star mergers. Such objects can contribute to the flux of ultra‑high energy cosmic rays, gamma‑rays and neutrinos. They can also lead to gravitational wave bursts of which at least one case has been detected by ground‑based gravitational wave detectors in coincidence with photons. In this project the PhD student will model particle acceleration and propagation within and from these objects by applying and further developing Monte Carlo and particle‑in‑cell codes. The goal is to predict multi‑messenger signatures that can then be compared with data.

Profile:

  • A university degree in a relevant field.
  • Basic knowledge of astroparticle physics phenomenology and some experience with programming in modern programming languages such as Python and C is an advantage.

What we offer:

  • Reliable remuneration based on wage agreements
  • Continuing education opportunities
  • University pensions
