Research Associate (m/f/d) - Atomistic Simulation of Materials for Micro- and Nanotechnologies

The Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a leading organization for application-oriented research. The department Simulation of Semiconductor Technologies develops and optimizes novel production processes for semiconductor and nanotechnologies based on computer simulations. The group Atomic Simulation of Materials studies material properties, related atomistic processes (e.g. during deposition or etching), and the link to coarser scale simulation methods, bridging the gap between basic research and industrial questions.

Responsibilities

• Independent work on research questions using tools such as molecular dynamics or density functional theory.
• Study of application-related research questions related to, e.g., material properties and surface processes.
• Development of automatic, efficient, and reusable calculation workflows.
• Active collaboration with other researchers, including group members, colleagues at the institute, and external partners from academia and industry.
• Presentation of research results at conferences, scientific publications, project documentation, and internal meetings.
• Acquisition of new projects, both public- and industry-funded.

Qualifications

• University degree (Master of Science or higher) in physics, material science, engineering or related fields.
• Previous experience in atomistic modelling and/or electronic structure modelling.
• Background knowledge in semiconductor- or nanotechnologies is advantageous.
• Experience with workflow tools or AI-driven material science is advantageous.
• Experience in high performance computing using Linux systems is desirable.
• Solid programming skills (Python and/or similar).
• Effective team player with a structured, focused, and independent way of working.
• Excellent English language skills and basic German skills.

Position is initially limited to 2 years. Weekly working time is 39 hours. The position is also available on a part-time basis.
