The Institute for Digital Economics is part of the School of Management Sciences and Technology at Hamburg University of Technology. We study decision making, strategic interaction and the impact of digitisation on markets and organisations. Using econometric methods, laboratory, online and field experiments, we analyse human behaviour rooted in decision theory and game theory, and aim to develop new behavioural economic theories. In summer 2025 we opened our Experimental Economics Lab (HHIDE Lab) with state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure for experimental research.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research projects on behavioural economics, the design of digital markets and/or decision making under uncertainty.
  • Present research results at conferences and publish articles in peer‑reviewed academic journals.
  • Contribute to teaching and supervise final theses at Bachelor and Master level.
  • Manage project‑related tasks and assist in preparing applications for third‑party funding.

Qualifications

  • Completed scientific university studies in economics, computer science, industrial engineering, business administration, or a related field.
  • Strong research interest in the impact of digitalisation on markets and organisations and/or current topics in behavioural economics.
  • Solid knowledge of empirical research methods (particularly econometrics or experimental economics) and a good command of microeconomic theory.
  • Independent and conscientious working style, high self‑motivation, strong teamwork skills and openness to new ideas.
  • Very good command of English (B2/C1, spoken and written); German is an asset but not a requirement.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to pursue a PhD within a reasonable time frame, with intensive supervision and flexibility to develop your own research ideas.
  • Comprehensive training in modern empirical and experimental methods.
  • Participation in national and international research projects and publications, and integration into an excellent research network.
  • Funding for participation in international conferences, summer schools, workshops and internal university training courses.
  • Collaboration in a motivated and creative team at the HHIDE Lab and the Institute for Digital Economics.
  • A position in a friendly and appreciative working environment.
  • Flexible and family‑friendly working conditions.
  • 30 day vacation per year.
  • Possibility of mobile working.
